Come join
the fun as the Elgin McDade Girl Scouts holds its first Paper Airplane Derby!
Each team (Me & My Guy) will be given materials and instructions from which they will have approximately one
hour to crease, fold, bend or tear into their creation (experimentation suggested!). Scouts of similar levels will compete
in the distance and accuracy competitions (note Cadettes, Seniors & Ambassadors will compete against each other). There
will also be a Best Team Name competition and an optional “Guys only” distance competition:
- Distance - Each Girl Scout will launch their
plane on the airfield; the one that goes the farthest is the winner. All distances will be measured from the starting line
to the point where the plane first touches the runway - not to the final resting place if it slides. Planes that do not land
on the runway area will forfeit that attempt. Each Girl Scout has up to two heats with winners competing among their level
to determine the winner for each level.
- Accuracy – Each Girl Scout will launch
their planes attempting to sail their plane through a hoop. During each elimination round the hoop will be placed farther
and farther away. Troops will compete in heats with the winners competing among their level to determine the winner for each
level.
- Best Team Name:
All levels judged together.
- Coolest Most Unique
Airplane - This is a separate airplane that is NOT used for the flying competition. This can be completed during the
Airplane Derby while other levels are competing. You may use any amount of type of paper you wish but only paper (and glue
or tape to hold it together). Be creative! Decorate it with paint, markers, colored pencils, stickers, etc. (We will provide
some materials for this, but bring your own if you want something special.) The plane does not actually have to fly but should
resemble an airplane (or some type of flying machine). Please put your full name and Troop number inconspicuously (that means
so no one can see it easily) on the bottom of the plane so it can be easily identified. Winners will be announced for each
level.
Materials The
following materials will be supplied for you to build your paper airplane:
- Standard white copy paper. (required)
- Three ID Stickers - (1 required) At least one ID Sticker
must be placed on clearly visible area on the outside of the plane with your name and Troop number. The others may be utilized
as "tape".
- One standard paper clip. (optional)
